Michael M. Chang is a 13-year-old up-and-coming composer and percussionist from California who recently earned international recognition in the UK’s Global Genius Music Competition’s Winter 2021-2022 and Winter 2022-2023 season, where he was named the “Season Top 1” winner, receiving gold prizes for his original composition, “Metropolis Skyline,” written for piano, flute, and vibraphone, and for his performance of “Rain Dance,” by Alice Gomez and Marilyn Rife, on the marimba.

Based in the Bay Area, Michael gave his first classical piano recital at age 6. At age 7, he and his best friend gave the first public performance of one of his original works, “School Song,” composed for voice, ukulele, and maracas. Michael continues to perform on drums, marimba, timpani, and numerous other percussion instruments and is currently composing works for string quartet and small orchestra.

Michael studies percussion with Huei-Yuan Pan and composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with June Bonacich. He recently performed with the California All-State Symphonic Band, under the direction of Ms. Cheryl Floyd, and the All-Northern (California) Honor Band, under the direction of Ms. Cathy Ettle. He has also been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall this summer for the 2022 Honors Performance Series under the direction of Curt Ebersole.
